How to choose a laptop that still feels fast in three years

Most laptops are retired not because the screen breaks, but because they feel slow. The good news: a few decisions at purchase time decide whether that happens in year two or year five.
Start with memory. 16GB is the floor for comfortable multitasking today; 32GB buys headroom for the browser tabs and background apps you will inevitably accumulate. RAM is the upgrade you are least likely to be able to make later, so pay for it now.
Storage matters less than people think as long as it is NVMe SSD. Aim for 512GB and lean on cloud or external drives for media libraries. A slower SATA drive, on the other hand, will make the whole machine feel sluggish regardless of the processor.
For the CPU, prioritise sustained performance over peak numbers. Thin-and-light chassis often throttle hard under load, so read reviews that measure performance after ten minutes, not ten seconds.
Finally, buy the better screen and the bigger battery. Those are the parts you touch every day, and they are the parts that make a three-year-old laptop still feel like a nice machine.
